Hi, I'm Dr. Sid Panchamia with Omni Spine and Joint. If you're experiencing pain in your lower back that radiates into your buttock or down the back of your leg, it may not be a disc problem. It could be your sacroiliac joint.
Common causes
The sacroiliac joint connects your spine to your pelvis. When that joint becomes inflamed or irritated, it can cause significant discomfort with sitting, standing, walking, or even turning in bed. SI joint pain is especially common in women who have had children, because pregnancy can stretch and stress the ligaments around the pelvis.
Who experiences it
It can also develop after a car accident, a fall, or another type of trauma. Some patients notice it after knee surgery, hip surgery, or even a leg injury, because changes in how you walk can place extra stress on the sacroiliac joint. Athletes and patients with prior spine surgeries can also develop SI joint dysfunction.
Symptoms to look for
If your pain is mostly on one side of the lower back and worsens when climbing stairs, standing on one leg, or getting out of a car, the sacroiliac joint may be the source.
